What exactly is a keloid?
It is a type of raised scar that grows well beyond the wound that caused it. It is not contagious and does not turn into cancer. It differs from a hypertrophic scar, which grows but stays within the area of the wound, and the distinction is made at the consultation.
Why did I get a keloid?
It usually appears after an injury to the skin: surgery, acne, a piercing, a tattoo, a burn, and sometimes a scratch. The causes are not fully understood, but there is a predisposition, partly genetic: according to the American Academy of Dermatology, between a third and a half of people with keloids have a relative with the same problem.
Is it hereditary?
There is often a family component, but not always. Having a relative with keloids increases the likelihood, and does not mean it will happen to everyone. It is more common in people with darker skin, but it can appear in anyone.
Does a keloid go away on its own?
As a rule, no. Unlike other scars, it tends to stay or to grow slowly over months or years. That is why it is worth having it assessed.
Why does it itch or hurt?
While the keloid is growing, itching, pain or tenderness are common. In a survey of people with keloids, itching was described as more intense than pain, felt mostly around the scar. If it bothers you, say so at the consultation: it is part of what we treat.
When should I see the doctor?
When the scar grows beyond the wound, becomes hard or raised, itches or hurts, limits movement, repeatedly breaks open, or has come back after being removed. If you have a fever, pus, or the area is warm and very red, seek urgent medical care.
Can I simply cut it off?
Surgical removal on its own carries a high risk of the keloid coming back, sometimes larger than before. That is why, when surgery is done, other approaches are usually combined with it to reduce that risk. The decision is individual and is made at the consultation.
What treatments are there?
Several approaches are described, which can be used alone or combined, and none works best for everyone. The choice depends on the area, the size, the age of the scar, previous treatments and what bothers you most. At the consultation, the doctor explains those that apply to your case.
Does the treatment hurt?
Some treatments can cause discomfort, and the doctor explains this before starting and adapts the approach. Tell us about your questions and worries at the consultation.
How many sessions will I need, and how long does it take?
It varies a great deal from person to person. Several sessions and a follow-up period are often needed. After examining the scar, the doctor will tell you what to expect in your case.
Can a keloid come back after treatment?
It is a real risk, even with treatment, and it is one of the reasons for follow-up afterwards. That is why we do not promise results before the consultation, and we plan the follow-up with you.
Can an old keloid be treated?
Yes. It can be assessed whatever the age of the scar. The doctor explains what is possible and realistic in your case.
Can I have piercings, tattoos or surgery if I am prone to keloids?
Speak to the doctor first. People who have had keloids are at higher risk of developing them again after any skin injury, so it is advisable to plan ahead of a piercing, a tattoo or cosmetic surgery.
Does the pre-assessment replace the consultation?
No. It helps the clinic understand your case and prepare for the consultation. Only the doctor can say whether it is a keloid and propose treatment.
Are results guaranteed?
No. Results vary from person to person and depend on each case. That is why we do not promise them before the consultation.
How much does the consultation cost?
The medical assessment consultation costs €100. Anyone who books through this page by 31 December 2026 pays €70. The cost of any treatment is set only after the medical assessment.
